The honest answer is: it depends. The Cinque Terre is one of the most beautiful places in Italy — but it is also a place built on cliffs, with narrow streets, steep staircases, and no sandy beaches in most villages. That said, thousands of families visit every year and have a wonderful time. The key is knowing what to expect before you arrive.

One important truth about the Cinque Terre that no tourism brochure will tell you: stairs are everywhere. Every village, every apartment, every path involves steps. This is simply the nature of the place. The question is not “how do I avoid stairs?” but “which apartments and villages have fewer, more manageable ones?” That is exactly what this guide covers.

🏖️ Which village is best for families?

✅ Monterosso al Mare — The best choice for families

Monterosso is the only village in the Cinque Terre with a proper sandy beach, sunbeds, and beach services. If you have young children who want to play in the sand and swim safely, Monterosso is the obvious choice. It is also the flattest of the five villages, making it the most pushchair-friendly (though “pushchair-friendly” in Cinque Terre is always relative).

Best for: families with toddlers and young children, beach holidays, first visits with kids.

✅ Vernazza — Magical but requires planning

Vernazza is widely considered the most beautiful village in the Cinque Terre, with its natural harbour and colourful houses. Best for: families with older children, those who want the “real” Cinque Terre experience.

⚠️ Corniglia — Not recommended for young children

Corniglia sits on top of a cliff and is reached by 377 steps from the train station (or a shuttle bus). It is the quietest and most authentic village but genuinely difficult with young children, strollers, or heavy luggage. We love Corniglia — but not for families with small kids.

🟰 Manarola and Riomaggiore — Good alternatives

Both villages are manageable for families and offer good connections to the other villages by train. Neither has a sandy beach, but both have rocky swimming areas. Manarola in particular is very popular with families who want a quieter, romantic atmosphere alongside their children.

🏠 Which apartments are best for families?

Choosing the right apartment makes or breaks a family holiday in the Cinque Terre. After 30 years of hosting families, we have identified two main categories: apartments with two bathrooms (essential for larger families) and apartments with fewer internal stairs (important for toddlers and elderly grandparents).

📅 When is the best time to visit Cinque Terre with kids?

Timing your visit well makes an enormous difference when travelling with children.

✅ Best: late May, June, September, early October
Warm weather, swimmable sea, and significantly fewer crowds than peak summer. Children can explore the villages without being jostled by large tour groups. Prices are lower and accommodation is easier to find.

⚠️ Avoid if possible: July and August
Peak season brings extreme heat (35°C+), very large crowds, long queues for the ferry and trains, and maximum prices. If July or August is your only option, arrive very early in the morning and book everything months in advance.

🍂 Underrated: November
Families with flexible school schedules often discover that November is magical — trails nearly empty, villages quiet, and an atmosphere that is impossible to find in summer.

🎒 Practical tips for visiting Cinque Terre with children

Leave the pushchair at home (or in the car)
Pushchairs are almost impossible to use in the Cinque Terre. The streets are narrow, the steps are steep, and there is nowhere to store a buggy easily. A baby carrier or backpack carrier is far more practical for toddlers.

Travel by train, not by car
Cars are not permitted in the villages. Park at La Spezia (Parcheggio Migliarina) or Levanto and take the regional train. The short train rides between villages are actually a highlight for children — tunnels, sea views, and excitement.

Pack water shoes
Except for Monterosso, all beaches in the Cinque Terre are rocky. Water shoes are essential for children who want to swim comfortably.

Book your apartment early

Use the ferry
The boat service between villages is a wonderful alternative to the train for children — they get to see the coastline from the sea, which is spectacular. Check seasonal timetables as the ferry does not run in winter.

❓ Is Cinque Terre safe for young children?

Yes, with normal supervision. The villages are safe and family-friendly. The main things to watch are the steep drops near harbour walls and cliff paths — children should always be supervised near the water. The hiking trails vary widely in difficulty; stick to the easier coastal paths with young children.

❓ Can I bring a stroller or pushchair?

We strongly advise against it. The streets are cobbled and narrow, and staircases are unavoidable in every village. A baby carrier or soft backpack carrier is far more practical and will make your visit much more enjoyable.

Monterosso al Mare, without question. It is the only village with a proper sandy beach and full beach services including sunbeds and umbrellas for hire. The other villages have rocky access to the sea, which is fine for older children but less suitable for toddlers.

In our experience, the Cinque Terre works best for children aged 5 and above. Younger children can absolutely visit and enjoy it — especially in Monterosso — but toddlers require more planning and patience given the terrain. Teenagers typically love it.
