Nove pagine, un'unica emozione
  1. Giuseppe Verdi 1813–1901
    Ave Maria

One of Verdi's late masterpieces, Otello brings Shakespeare's tragedy to the stage with unprecedented emotional intensity. The Ave Maria of Act IV is Desdemona's prayer before retiring to bed — a whispered plea for mercy that foreshadows the impending tragedy. Verdi blends devotion, fear and tenderness into a melodic line of suspended purity.

Ave! Amen!

    English

Hail Mary, full of grace, chosen among brides and virgins are you, blessed be the fruit, O blessed one, of your maternal womb, Jesus. Pray for those who, adoring you, kneel before you, pray for the sinner, for the innocent, for the oppressed weak and for the mighty — wretched themselves — show forth your mercy. Pray for those who beneath outrage bow their brow, and beneath evil fate; for us, for us pray always, and in the hour of our death, pray for us, pray for us, pray!

[She remains kneeling and, resting her brow on the prie-dieu, silently repeats the prayer of which only the first and last words can be heard.]

Hail Mary... in the hour of death. Hail! Amen!

  2. Giacomo Puccini 1858–1924

In the heart of Act II, Cio-Cio-San imagines the day of Pinkerton's return: the ship appearing on the horizon, her beloved climbing the hill. It is the wrenching fantasy of one who keeps hoping against all evidence. One of Puccini's most celebrated pages, where melodic sweetness conceals a grief already poised to break.

    Italiano — L. Illica & G. Giacosa

    [a Suzuki]

    English

One fine day we shall see a thread of smoke rising on the far horizon of the sea. And then the ship appears. Then the trim white ship sails into the harbour, thunders out her salute. Do you see? He has come! I do not go down to meet him. Not I. I stand on the brow of the hill and wait, and wait a long time, and the long wait does not weary me. And from out of the city crowd a man, a tiny speck, sets off up the hill. Who can it be? Who? And when he has arrived, what will he say? What? He will call "Butterfly" from afar. I, without answering, shall stay concealed, partly to tease him and partly so as not to die at the first meeting, and he, a little troubled, will call out: «Little wife, verbena blossom», the names he used to call me when he came.

    [to Suzuki]

All this will come to pass, I promise you. Keep your fear to yourself — with steadfast faith, I await him.

  3. Giuseppe Verdi 1813–1901
    arr. Cesare Goretta

An instrumental journey through the most beloved themes of La Traviata: from the joyful Brindisi of Act I to Violetta's sorrowful farewell. In a few minutes the fantasia traces the entire emotional arc of the opera, from the Parisian celebration to the loneliness of illness.

  4. George Gershwin 1898–1937
    Summertime
da Porgy and Bess · 1935

A lullaby born at the crossroads of jazz, blues and the grand operatic tradition. Gershwin wrote it as a berceuse for the character of Clara, blending African-American sonorities with American music theatre. Among the most reinterpreted standards of the 20th century, it keeps intact its luminous melancholy.

    English — D. Heyward

Summertime, and the livin' is easy. Fish are jumpin', and the cotton is high. Your daddy's rich, and your mamma's good lookin', so hush, little baby, don't you cry. One of these mornings you're going to rise up singing, then you'll spread your wings and you'll take to the sky. But till that morning, there's nothing can harm you, with daddy and mamma standing by.

    Italiano

Adriana Lecouvreur was the celebrated 18th-century actress of the Comédie-Française. In this Act I aria she introduces herself with humility to the Prince of Bouillon: art as service, the actor as instrument of the creative genius. A page of aristocratic lyricism, among the high points of Italian verismo.

    Testo · Text
    Italiano — A. Colautti

    English

Behold, I scarce breathe. I am the humble handmaid of the creating genius; he offers me speech, I spread it abroad to all hearts… Of the verse I am the accent, the echo of human drama, the fragile instrument, vassal of his hand… Gentle, joyful, harrowing, my name is Faithfulness; a breath is my voice, that with the new day will die.

  6. Alfonso Esparza Oteo 1894–1950
    Dime que sí
    Canzone messicana

A Mexican composer among the leading figures of the golden age of Spanish-language song. Dime que sí is a passionate, disarmed plea for love, where the melody captures all the fragility of one awaiting an answer that could change everything.

    Español — A. Esparza Oteo

    English

They say you do not love me, I want to hear it from you. If you have other loves, I want to hear it from you. They say that on your dark face other kisses of love still tremble. Nothing matters to me in life if I know you belong to another. Tell me they are lying, that you will never have another love. Let my lips name you softly, as one names God. Tell me yes! And a piece of heaven will be mine. And if you ask it of me, my heaven and my life I shall also give to you.

  7. Giacomo Puccini 1858–1924
    arr. Cesare Goretta

Il Trittico brings together three one-act operas of opposite character: the dark drama of Il tabarro, the mystical light of Suor Angelica, the brilliant comedy of Gianni Schicchi. The fantasia traverses the principal themes of all three works, capturing the extraordinary expressive range of late Puccini.

    English

Kiss me, kiss me deeply, as if tonight were the last time. Kiss me, kiss me deeply, for I fear losing you, losing you afterwards. Kiss me, kiss me deeply, as if tonight were the last time. Kiss me, kiss me deeply, for I fear losing you, losing you afterwards. I want to hold you close, to look at myself in your eyes, to see you beside me. Think that perhaps tomorrow I will already be far away, very far from here. Kiss me, kiss me deeply, as if tonight were the last time. Kiss me, kiss me deeply, for I fear losing you, losing you afterwards. Kiss me, (kiss me) kiss me deeply, (kiss me deeply) for I fear losing you, losing you afterwards, for I fear losing you, losing you afterwards, losing you afterwards.

  9. Fernando J. Obradors 1897–1945

From the Canciones clásicas españolas, El vito is a sophisticated arrangement of an Andalusian folk dance. A lively, flirtatious dance which Obradors transforms into a virtuosic page full of Mediterranean élan — a sunlit, festive finale for the evening.

    Testo · Text
    Español — F.J. Obradors

    English

An old woman is worth a real and a young girl two cuartos, but since I am so poor, I'll take the cheapest of all. With the vito, vito, vito, with the vito, vito, go. Don't tickle me, sir, or I'll turn bright red. Four priests are carrying her off, carrying her off to bury her. Four priests are carrying her off with the vito, vito, go. They're carrying her off — she's my mother-in-law, oh! how I laugh! With the vito, vito, vito, oh! I shall never see her again!
