Are the Cinque Terre right for you?

The Cinque Terre are five villages built on a cliff, with very little flat ground, almost no traffic inside the villages and steps at the end of most arrivals. Visitors who know this in advance usually love it. Visitors expecting a resort with parking at the door do not. Monterosso al Mare is the flattest of the five and the easiest for travellers who cannot manage stairs.

How many steps are there in the Cinque Terre villages?

Most homes in Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore sit fifty to a hundred steps above the street, and the old houses have no lifts. Corniglia is reached from its station by a brick stairway of 382 steps, or by shuttle bus.

Do you need a car in the Cinque Terre?

No. The villages are closed to outside traffic and parking is scarce and expensive. The train links all five villages in a few minutes and runs every fifteen to twenty minutes for most of the day, with ferries in season.

Are the Cinque Terre suitable for older travellers or people with limited mobility?

Partly. Monterosso al Mare has the flattest streets, the only real sand beaches and the widest choice of restaurants, and it is the practical choice for travellers who cannot manage stairs. A small number of homes in the other villages have a lift, which is rare and worth asking about by name.

When is the best time to visit the Cinque Terre?

May, June and September are warmer than most visitors expect and far quieter than July and August. Time of day matters as much as season: day trippers arrive late in the morning and leave in the late afternoon, so early mornings and evenings belong to those staying in the villages.
