The gateway to everything
La Spezia Centrale is the main rail hub for the entire eastern Ligurian coast. Regional trains to the Cinque Terre run frequently throughout the day — you rarely wait more than 20 minutes, and in peak season services are even more frequent. From the station you can reach every village without changing train:

A real city, not a stage set
After two or three days in the Cinque Terre, most visitors notice the same thing: the villages are beautiful, but they are also exhausting. Every street is a queue. Every restaurant has a wait. The sense of being in a shared tourist experience never quite fades.
La Spezia is different. It is a working city — the kind with a proper covered market where locals buy their fish in the morning, a piazza where people sit and talk rather than pose for photographs, and restaurants whose menus change with what arrived at the port that day. The Friday market along Viale Garibaldi is one of the most lively street markets in the region, selling everything from local produce to clothes and household goods. It is exactly the kind of thing that does not happen in Vernazza.
The city also has genuine cultural attractions: the Naval Museum, one of the most important in Italy, and the Museo Amedeo Lia, a remarkable private collection of medieval and Renaissance art that most visitors never discover. For anyone spending more than three or four nights in the area, La Spezia rewards exploration in its own right.
Eat better, spend less
The Cinque Terre has excellent food — but it has also been discovered. In the villages, a plate of trofie al pesto or a grilled branzino will cost considerably more than the same dish prepared with the same ingredients ten kilometres away. This is not a criticism: it is simply the economics of a place where demand far exceeds supply and rents are high.
La Spezia's restaurant scene is entirely different. The city has a long tradition of mesciua — a local bean and grain soup that you will not find on any tourist menu — of freshly fried street food from the friggitorie along the port, and of fish restaurants that serve the day's catch without ceremony or markup. An evening meal in La Spezia is both cheaper and, frequently, better than its equivalent in the villages.
