The story

Nine centuries watching over Vernazza

Its name means windmill in the Ligurian dialect — and that is exactly what it was. Built around 1100 AD, when the Genoese Doria family ruled Vernazza, Muìn a Véntu ground the village's grain with the power of the sea wind; the openings in its upper walls, designed to catch it, are still there today. Of the three medieval towers that once marked the skyline of Vernazza, this is the only one that survives with its original stones and architecture intact.

In the twentieth century the tower found a second life. Restored by Aldo Trionfo, one of Italy's great theatre directors, it became a bohemian refuge where the most celebrated and unconventional Italian artists of the era — directors, actors, painters, composers — gathered as his guests. That creative spirit never left. The tower belongs today to Giorgio, a sculptor and set designer, and his wife, a theatre director: every piece of furniture is an original work of art made by their hands, from the carved dining table to the door drawn in Indian ink.

The property is exclusively managed by Cinque Terre Riviera, the local tour operator based in Vernazza since 1991. Booking direct means the best available rate, no third-party fees and our concierge team a few steps away on Via Roma throughout your stay.

You may have seen it before

The tower that inspired a film loved around the world

If the silhouette of Muìn a Véntu looks familiar, there is a reason: this is the tower widely known as "Luca's tower", the real Vernazza landmark that inspired the animated film set on the Ligurian coast. Visitors from all over the world climb the path just to photograph it from the outside.

Very few of them know that the gate can open — and that the tower, its garden and its nine hundred years of stories can be yours for a night or a week. Not a film set: the real thing.

The setting

A private garden above the rooftops

The tower stands uphill at the beginning of the old footpath from Vernazza to Corniglia, away from the crowds but still within the village. A gate opens onto a lush walled garden with shaded dining corners and breezy terraces — and below you, the whole of Vernazza: the pastel houses, the harbour, the church on the water, and the open sea stretching towards Monterosso.

Climb to the top floor of the tower and the view becomes a full circle — village, terraced vineyards, cliffs and sea in every direction. Guests consistently describe it as the best view they have ever woken up to.

The spaces

Three levels of tower, one garden annex

The garden annex

A generous open space beside the tower base: double bed, dining area around Giorgio's hand-made art table, and a kitchenette with fridge, electric hob, Nespresso machine and an antique marble sink straight out of a Ligurian kitchen of the past. The property's bathroom, with walk-in shower, is here on the ground floor.

The tower — first floor

Up the wooden stair inside the medieval walls, a cosy bedroom with a hand-crafted French double bed — sleeping inside stones that have stood for nine hundred years.

The tower — top floor

A single bed at the summit of the tower, where the windmill once caught the wind — and the most extraordinary bedroom view in Vernazza: 360 degrees over the village, the vineyards and the sea.

The garden

Shaded outdoor dining, quiet corners among the greenery, and the village at your feet. Breakfasts, aperitivi and long evenings happen here.

An honest word

A medieval tower, not a hotel — and that is the point

Muìn a Véntu is one of the most exclusive and unusual stays in the Cinque Terre, and it asks something of its guests. The walk up from the village is short but steep and uneven; the tower floors are connected by narrow stairs; the only bathroom is on the ground floor; there is no air conditioning — the stone walls and the sea breeze do that work; and Wi-Fi covers the garden and annex.

It is made for couples in search of romance — proposals and honeymoons happen here regularly — for small groups of adult friends, and for anyone who loves history, art and waking up somewhere genuinely unrepeatable. It is not suitable for children under 10, pets, wheelchair users or guests with limited mobility.

To make the arrival effortless, porterage is included: book at least two days ahead and arrive within check-in hours, and our team carries your luggage up to the tower for you.
