Genoa is approximately 80 km north-west of the Cinque Terre along the coast. By train it takes between 1 hour and 1 hour 30 minutes depending on the service. By car it's a similar time, though parking at the villages is extremely limited. By ferry in summer it's a spectacular 3–4 hour coastal journey.
The gateway to the Cinque Terre by train is La Spezia Centrale. From there, the local Cinque Terre Express connects all five villages every 15–30 minutes.
Option 1 — By train: fast, scenic, stress-free
The train is by far the best way to get from Genoa to the Cinque Terre. The line runs directly along the Ligurian coast — in places hugging the cliff above the sea — and is one of the most scenic railway journeys in Italy.
The route
Genoa has two main stations: Genova Piazza Principe (closer to the port and historic centre) and Genova Brignole (closer to the eastern part of the city). Both have regular trains south towards La Spezia.
- Genova Brignole or Piazza Principe → La Spezia Centrale: Regional or Intercity train, approximately 1h – 1h 30min. Intercity trains are faster and more comfortable; regional trains stop at more stations but are cheaper.
- La Spezia Centrale → your village: Cinque Terre Express, 10–25 minutes depending on destination. Riomaggiore is the first stop (10 min), Vernazza is 20 min, Monterosso is 25 min.
Total journey time: approximately 1h 30min – 2h door to village.
Important: buy a through ticket
Since Genoa and the Cinque Terre are both in Liguria, you can buy a single through ticket from Genova to your destination village on Trenitalia — no need to buy separate tickets for each leg. Enter "Genova Brignole" or "Genova Piazza Principe" as origin and "Vernazza" (or your preferred village) as destination.
💡 Local tip: If you are arriving at Genoa Airport (Cristoforo Colombo), take the Volabus shuttle to Genova Brignole station (approximately 30 minutes), then the train south. The airport is not on the railway line, so this connection is the standard approach.

Option 4 — By car: scenic but complicated
Driving from Genoa to the Cinque Terre takes approximately 1h 30min – 2h on the A12 motorway towards La Spezia.
Route from Genoa: A7/A26 towards Genoa, then A12 Genova–Livorno heading south-east, exit at Carrodano–Levanto (for the northern villages: Monterosso, Vernazza) or continue to La Spezia (for all villages by train).
However, driving into the villages themselves is not practical. Roads are narrow, most village centres are car-free zones, and parking is either not allowed or very expensive. The best approach:
- Park at Levanto (free public parking near the station) and take the train into the villages — Monterosso is 4 minutes, Vernazza is 8 minutes
- Park at La Spezia (underground garage below the train station, approx. €15/day) and take the Cinque Terre Express
