Venice and the Cinque Terre are two of the most iconic places in Italy, and combining them in one trip is entirely doable. But the journey takes some planning, because there's no direct train and the two places are roughly 250 km apart.

How far is Venice from the Cinque Terre?
The distance between Venice and the Cinque Terre is approximately 250 km by rail (or about 310 km by road). It's not a short hop — you're crossing northern Italy from the Adriatic coast to the Ligurian Sea. But it's a very manageable half-day journey, especially by high-speed train, and the scenery along the way is beautiful.
The gateway to the Cinque Terre by train is La Spezia Centrale. From La Spezia, the local Cinque Terre Express runs every 15–30 minutes through all five villages.
Option 1 — By train: the best way (2026 guide)
Taking the train is the most comfortable, most environmentally friendly, and most practical way to get from Venice to the Cinque Terre. No parking headaches, no traffic, and you arrive directly into the villages.
The route: Venice → Florence → La Spezia
There is no direct high-speed train from Venice to La Spezia. The standard route involves one change in Florence (Santa Maria Novella):
- Venice Santa Lucia → Florence SMN — Frecciarossa or Italo high-speed train, approx. 2h 05min. Trains depart roughly every hour from early morning.
- Florence SMN → La Spezia Centrale — Regional train (Regionale Veloce), approx. 1h 40min. Note: this is a regional train, not high-speed — it's included if you book a through ticket on Trenitalia.com.
- La Spezia → your village — Cinque Terre Express, 10–25 minutes depending on your destination.
Total journey time: approximately 4h 30min – 5h (including connection time in Florence).
Alternative route: Venice → Milan → La Spezia / Monterosso
A less obvious but useful alternative goes via Milan. It takes slightly longer overall, but has one key advantage: from Milan Centrale, there is a daily Intercity train that stops directly at Monterosso al Mare — the only high-capacity train that serves the Cinque Terre directly without a change at La Spezia.
- Venice → Milan Centrale: Frecciarossa, approx. 2h 20min
- Milan → Monterosso / La Spezia: Intercity (IC), approx. 2h 40min
This route requires two separate ticket purchases because Trenitalia's algorithm doesn't show it automatically. But it's worth considering if you want a direct connection to Monterosso or prefer reserved seats for the entire journey.
Prices and booking (2026)
High-speed tickets (Venice → Florence) start from around €19–25 if booked in advance, rising to €45–70+ for last-minute or flexible fares. The regional Florence → La Spezia leg is inexpensive (around €12–15) and can be booked as a single through ticket on Trenitalia. We recommend booking at least 3–4 weeks in advance, especially in peak season (June–September).

Venice access fee — important for 2026
⚠️ From 3 April to 26 July 2026, the Municipality of Venice requires day visitors to pay a €5 entry fee to access the historic centre on certain dates. If you're departing from Venice Santa Lucia on one of these days, check whether the fee applies to you at the official Venice website. Hotel guests are exempt.
Option 2 — By car: scenic but complicated
Driving from Venice to the Cinque Terre takes approximately 4–5 hours on the motorway, traffic permitting.
Route: A4 motorway towards Milan → A7 towards Genoa → A12/A15 towards La Spezia.
However, we strongly advise against driving into the villages themselves. The roads are extremely narrow, the villages are largely car-free, and parking in Vernazza, Riomaggiore, Manarola and Corniglia is either not allowed or very limited. Monterosso has slightly more parking but it fills quickly in summer.
The practical approach: drive to La Spezia (good parking at the underground garage beneath the train station, approx. €15/day) or to Levanto (free public parking near the station), then take the train into the villages. The train journey from La Spezia to Vernazza, for example, takes just 12 minutes.

Option 3 — Private transfer with driver: the most comfortable option

Option 4 — Venice to Cinque Terre by boat?
There is no direct ferry service between Venice and the Cinque Terre. The two coasts face different seas — Venice is on the Adriatic, the Cinque Terre on the Ligurian — and a direct maritime connection simply doesn't exist.
However, once you've arrived in the Cinque Terre, exploring by boat is one of the great pleasures of the region. Seasonal ferries connect La Spezia to all five villages (except Corniglia, which has no harbour) from approximately April to October.
