Before you book · An honest guide

Five villages built on a cliff, reached on foot and by train. Wonderful for some people, wrong for others. We would rather you knew which one you are.

The Cinque Terre are five fishing villages stacked on a cliff between the sea and terraced vineyards. There is very little flat ground, almost no traffic inside the villages, and almost every arrival ends in a flight of steps. Visitors who know this in advance tend to call it the trip of a lifetime. Visitors who expected a beach resort with a car park do not.

The honest version

How much climbing is really involved?

A great deal. Most homes in Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore sit fifty to a hundred steps above the street, and there are no lifts in the old houses. Corniglia, which has no harbour, is reached from its station by a brick stairway of 382 steps, or by the shuttle bus if you prefer.

Here is the part that matters, and we can say it with numbers rather than opinions. We have collected 5,335 guest reviews since 2015. Steps and stairs are mentioned in 16% of the reviews that gave three stars or fewer, and in 14% of the reviews that gave five. In other words, the climbing is almost equally present in the happy reviews and the disappointed ones.

The stairs are not what ruins a holiday here. The surprise is. Guests who arrived expecting them wrote about them fondly, in the same breath as the view. Guests who had not been told wrote about them as a betrayal.

The question everyone asks second

Do you need a car?

No, and it is better without one. The villages are closed to outside traffic, parking is scarce and expensive, and the train links all five in a few minutes, running every fifteen to twenty minutes for most of the day. There are also ferries in season, which is the finest way to see the coast.

Our guests tell us this themselves without being asked. Across those thousands of reviews, after the words Cinque Terre, the expression that appears most often in the happiest ones is train station, 416 times. This is a place measured in minutes on foot, not in kilometres by road.

Knees, suitcases and grandparents

What if you cannot manage steps?

Then choose carefully rather than giving up. Monterosso al Mare has the flattest streets, the only real sand beaches and the widest choice of restaurants, and it is where we would send a family travelling with grandparents. A handful of homes in the other villages do have a lift, which is rare enough to be worth asking about by name.

Travelling with heavy suitcases changes the answer too. Some villages have a porter service, and we can arrange a transfer to the closest point a vehicle can reach. Tell us what you are carrying and who is carrying it, and we will tell you honestly which houses to rule out.

What you are actually buying

A place, not a product

The terraces above these villages were cut into the rock by hand over centuries, held up by dry stone walls that are still repaired by hand today. The houses are narrow because there was nowhere to build outwards. The lemons, the wine, the anchovies and the basil come from a few kilometres of coast that has been worked since the Middle Ages.

None of that was designed for tourism, which is exactly why people cross the world to see it. Choosing the Cinque Terre means accepting the place on its own terms: small rooms, steep lanes, early closing, a train instead of a car. Accept them and you get something no resort can manufacture.

When it is at its best

When should you come?

May, June and September are warmer than most visitors expect and far quieter than July and August. But the more useful answer is about the hours, not the months. Day trippers arrive late in the morning and leave in the late afternoon, so the villages belong to those who sleep here at either end of the day.

Staying in the villages instead of visiting them is the single decision that changes the trip. Early morning in Vernazza harbour and evening in Manarola are the reason people come back.

The part nobody else will tell you

Who should not come here?

If you want to park at the door of your accommodation, if you need a lift and step-free access throughout, if you are looking for large modern rooms, nightlife after midnight or a resort with a pool and a buffet, this is not your destination, and we will say so before you book rather than after you arrive.

Nothing is lost by choosing somewhere else. The Ligurian coast has beautiful places with roads, lifts and level ground, and we would rather point you towards one of them than take a booking that ends in disappointment for both of us.

And if you are still reading

Then it is probably for you

If a village that closes early sounds like a feature rather than a fault, if you would rather walk a coastal path than drive a scenic road, if you like the idea of carrying your bread up a hundred steps because the view at the top is worth it, then you will love it here, and the steps will end up in your photographs rather than your complaints.

That is what the reviews say too. The visitors who mention the climbing most fondly are almost always the ones who gave five stars.

Who is telling you this

We live here, and we say no when we should

Cinque Terre Riviera has been a licensed Italian tour operator since 1991 and has managed homes here directly since 2006, from an office on Via Roma in Vernazza. We have collected more than 5,300 guest reviews, averaging 4.64 out of 5, and we read every one of them.

That is also why this page exists. Tell us who is travelling, how old they are, what they can carry and what they want from the week, and we will tell you which of our houses fits and which does not. Sometimes the useful answer is that none of them does.
